Come to the Deltaplein in The Hague, pick up a sonic bike and discover a new musical way to experience the dunes around Kijkduin!

Inspired by the surroundings, the sand, the bicycle paths and the coming and going of people, birds and tides, internationally acclaimed sound artist and composer Kaffe Matthews has made a composition that stretches west and east of Kijkduin for you to discover on a sonic bike.

The sonic bike was created by Kaffe Matthews and has evolved over 10 years of international projects. It is simply a bicycle with frame mounted speakers carrying sounds and music that will change and play dependent on where and how fast the cyclist goes, using our sonic bike to GPS software system. This encourages participants to ride slow, stop static, spin in circles or pause for quiet spots of listening.

Reflecting the invasion of human artifice in natural landscapes, Pedalling SeaSides will inspire solo or communal riding, creating a different experience for each rider as they traverse and discover hidden borders together or alone.  Since the sonic bikes use loudspeakers and not headphones, even if you are not riding a sonic bike yourself you will be able to enjoy the piece by listening to and looking at others who are doing so.

This creates an unique and immersive experience for everyone, whether you are young or old, local or from far away, as long as you can ride a bike and enjoy music.

Kaffe Matthews has been making cutting-edge sound compositions for over two decades. A recurring theme in her work is broadening the experience of music by actively engaging the body of the listener. Kaffe Matthews injects music into everyday situations, composing for urban and natural environments and turning the audience, wildlife, wind and sea currents into the performers of her music. While pressing at the boundaries of contemporary composition, her work remains accessible to a wide audience.

The Bicrophonic Research Institute (BRI) is an association that makes music and audio landscapes to be triggered and played by you the cyclist. Not an app and free of the internet, it creates an outdoor listening experience for all, the antithesis of headphones. Launched as an association by Matthews in 2014, the BRI works collectively from a London lab creating open source hard and software applications whilst facilitating the growth of independent sonic cycling hubs worldwide. Currently these BRI hubs are active in Finland, Houston and Brussels, with Berlin underway for 2017.

Pedalling SeaSides is commissioned and produced by the artist-run platform iii in cooperation with Satellietgroep and Studio Loos and with financial support from the Creative Industries Fund NL, Stroom Den Haag and the Municipality of The Hague.

Kom naar het Deltaplein in Kijkduin, haal een sonic bike op en ontdek een nieuwe muzikale manier om de duinen rond Kijkduin te ervaren!

Geïnspireerd door de omgeving, het zand en de fietspaden en het komen en gaan van mensen, vogels en de getijden, heeft internationaal gerenommeerd geluidskunstenares en componiste Kaffe Matthews geluiden en muziekgemaakt en in het landschap geplaatst om ontdekt te worden met een sonic bike.

Sonic bikes zijn speciaal ontworpen fietsen met een GPS-gestuurde audiospeler en luidsprekers, die samen muziek of geluiden ten gehore brengen die veranderen naar aanleiding van de locatie en de beweging van de fietser, als een interactieve soundtrack. Zo kun je geluiden ontdekken door hard of juist zacht te fietsen, te stoppen, rondjes te draaien of te pauzeren voor rustige luistermomenten.

Dit creëert een unieke meeslepende interactieve ervaring voor iedereen, van jong tot oud, van ver of van dichtbij, zolang je maar kan fietsen en van muziek houdt.

Sinds 1990 maakt Kaffe Matthews vooruitstrevende geluidscomposities. Een terugkerend thema in haar werk is de ervaring van muziek verbreden, niet alleen het luisteren maar ook de lichamelijke ervaring erbij betrekken. Hiervoor heeft zij verschillende nieuwe technieken uitgevonden en wordt gerekend tot een van de pioniers op dit gebied. Tegelijkertijd blijf haar werk altijd toegankelijk voor een groot publiek door haar interesse in het werken met alledaagse situaties en de natuur.

Het Bicrophonic Research Institute (BRI) is een vereniging die muziek en geluidslandschappen ontwikkelt die in werking gezet en gespeeld kunnen worden door fietsers op een sonic bike. Sonic bikes werken niet met apps, zijn offline en creëren een luisterervaring in de openlucht voor iedereen, het tegenovergestelde van een ervaring met een koptelefoon. In 2014 opgezet als vereniging door Kaffe Matthews, werkt de BRI als collectief vanuit een lab in Londen. Daar ontwikkelen ze open source hard- en software terwijl ze de groei van onafhankelijke sonic bike hubs faciliteren. Momenteel zijn er sonic bike hubs in Finland, Houston en Brussel, Berlijn zal volgen in 2017.
