PROXIMITY MUSIC: MUSIC BEYOND SOUND

Music not as sound, music not as media, music as something that we make and experience together with our whole bodies and all of our senses. Have we forgotten how to do this? How can we invent music with such ancestral qualities now?
iii and Rewire present a tour of installations at multiple locations in The Hague which engage with the senses and the body, with instruments and machines, with ritual and play. Individuals and small groups are invited to explore iconic and lesser known sites in the city, discovering new works created by local and international artists.
Proximity Music offers a route through a series of performative spaces both public and intimate which feed the need for closeness and embodied connection, while questioning our expectations of what is near and far, what is local and what is foreign, what is familiar and what is unknown.
Starting from the government center and taking a walk through underground and repurposed art venues, the tour will present: an ever evolving environment of Indian temple bells played by Google-sponsored machine learning algorithms from award winning bengalese sound artist and scholar Budhaditya Chattopadhyay; an instrument played by your breath and the wind by The Hague born, Swiss based composer Cathy van Eck; physical computing and sonic explorations of auto-mechanics by Turkish-born, Dutch educated Gorkem Arikan in collaboration with auto-mechanic Ibrahim Tokkaya and documentary filmmaker Batuhan Keskiner; an enveloping shower of sparks in the beautifully dangerous work of Pelle Schilling; Mariska de Groot’s mesmerizing magic lantern installation Incidence of Light, recalling avantgarde visual music experiments and translating the light cast upon the room into sound; the spiralling sonic textiles of EJTECH; a tactile sound duet by Icelendic artist Sól Ey; the trance inducing ritual of Hans Becker’s new work La Floresta; an ongoing participatory gamelan session by Laurie Spiegel & Mark Fell; a pedestrian bridge turned into a carillon played with ropes, pulleys and rubber mallets by Kunrad.

Muziek niet als geluid, muziek niet als media, muziek als iets dat we maken en gezamenlijk ervaren met ons hele lichaam en al onze zintuigen. Zijn we vergeten hoe we dit moeten doen? Hoe kunnen we nu muziek uitvinden met zulke intrinsieke kwaliteiten?
iii en Rewire presenteren een tour langs installaties op meerdere locaties in Den Haag die zich bezighouden met de zintuigen en het lichaam, met instrumenten en machines, met ritueel en spel. Individuen en kleine groepen worden uitgenodigd om iconische en minder bekende plekken in de stad te verkennen en nieuwe werken te ontdekken die zijn gemaakt door lokale en internationale kunstenaars.
Proximity Music biedt een route langs een reeks performatieve ruimtes, zowel openbare als intieme, die de behoefte aan nabijheid en belichaamde verbinding voeden, terwijl we onze verwachtingen van wat dichtbij en veraf is, wat lokaal en wat vreemd is, wat vertrouwd en wat onbekend is, bevragen.
Met het regeringscentrum als beginpunt die vervolgd wordt door een wandeling door ondergrondse en herbestemde kunstlocaties, zal de tour het volgende presenteren: een steeds veranderende omgeving van Indiase tempelklokken gespeeld door Google gesponsorde machine learning-algoritmen van de bekroonde Bengaalse geluidskunstenaar en onderzoeker Budhaditya Chattopadhyay; een instrument bespeeld door je adem en de wind door de in Den Haag geboren, Zwitserse componiste Cathy van Eck; Physical Computing en sonische verkenningen met automechanica door de in Turkije geboren, in Nederland opgeleide Gorkem Arikan in samenwerking met automonteur Ibrahim Tokkaya en documentairemaker Batuhan Keskiner; een omhullende regen van vonken in het prachtig gevaarlijke werk van Pelle Schilling; Mariska de Groots betoverende toverlantaarninstallatie Incidence of Light, herinnerend aan avantgarde visuele muziekexperimenten en de vertaling van het licht dat op de kamer wordt geworpen in geluid; het spiraliserende sonische textiel van EJTECH; een tactiel klankduet van de IJslandse kunstenaar Sól Ey; het trance-opwekkende ritueel van Hans Beckers nieuwe werk La Floresta; een doorlopende participatieve gamelansessie door Laurie Spiegel & Mark Fell; een voetgangersbrug die door Kunrad wordt omgevormd tot een klokkenspel, bespeeld met touwen, katrollen en rubberen hamers.
