About the award
This year for the first time iii awards the iii Research Residency Award to a fresh graduate of the Royal Academy of Art. The winner will be invited for a 4 week residency at iii workspace, which includes a fee of €2000 and a production budget of €1000.
Motivation for our choice of winner
As winner of the iii Residency Award for 2021, for the compelling power and masterful execution of the performance Elbows on the Table, we choose Cemre Kara. Cemre’s work offers a stunning visual and dramatic presentation drawing on timeless aesthetic worlds of classical painting, theatre, performance and video art, confronting us viscerally with the most basic reactions of repulsion and attraction. By reinventing the use of ordinary cutlery, what seems innocently familiar is revealed in a new light. We begin to question how the dialectics of culture vs biology and civilization vs barbarism are encoded in the tools and rituals of dining. Greed, power and violence dance in a precarious equilibrium with beauty.
As a platform operating in the field of Art, Science & Technology, we find it refreshing how the work approaches the relationship between humans and technology: focusing on tools that we tend to take for granted. Here “cutting edge” is true only in the most literal sense. Rather than insisting on the cliché of new inventions that make life easier, we would like to reinforce how sometimes inventions that make things harder can be more rewarding.
We see strong potential for future development in the work of Cemre Kara that we are eager to support through the residency program of iii.
We also need to mention the two other nominees for the award, Kexin Hao with Total Body Workout for bringing joy to the authoritarian image of the healthy body at a time in which it is very much needed, and Leonardo Scarin for taking two things we don’t usually like, a VR headset and quarantining, and combining them in the poetic and beautiful experience that is Variations on a Remote Room.
About iii
iii is an artist run, community platform supporting new interdisciplinary practices linking performance, technology and the human senses. Founded by alumni of the ArtScience Interfaculty and Institute of Sonology in 2013, iii has been supporting new graduates each year from the start. Since 2021 iii has obtained recognition from the Municipality of The Hague and the Creative Industries Fund NL in the form of structural funding and is therefore able to offer stronger support to artists undergoing the delicate transition between studies and profession.

Dit jaar reikt iii voor de eerste keer de iii Research Residency Award uit aan een pas afgestudeerde van de Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten. De winnaar wordt uitgenodigd voor een residentie van 4 weken in de iii workspace, inclusief een honorarium van € 2000 en een productiebudget van € 1000.
Jury rapport
Als winnaar van de iii Residency Award voor 2021, voor de meeslepende kracht en meesterlijke uitvoering van de voorstelling Elbows on the Table, kiezen we voor Cemre Kara. Cemre’s werk biedt een verbluffende visuele en dramatische presentatie, gebaseerd op tijdloze esthetische werelden van de klassieke schilderkunst, theater, performance en videokunst, en confronteert ons visceraal met de meest basale reacties van afstoting en aantrekking. Door het gebruik van alledaags bestek opnieuw uit te vinden, wordt wat onschuldig lijkt, in een nieuw licht onthuld. We beginnen ons af te vragen hoe de dialectiek van cultuur versus biologie en beschaving versus barbaarsheid is versleuteld in de gereedschappen en rituelen van dineren. Hebzucht, macht en geweld dansen in een precair evenwicht met schoonheid.
Als een platform dat actief is op het gebied van kunst, wetenschap en technologie, vinden we het verfrissend hoe het werk de relatie tussen mens en technologie benadert: ons richten op tools die we als vanzelfsprekend beschouwen. Hier is ‘cutting edge’ alleen waar in de meest letterlijke zin. In plaats van vast te houden aan het cliché van nieuwe uitvindingen die het leven gemakkelijker maken, willen we benadrukken dat uitvindingen die dingen moeilijker maken soms meer lonend kunnen zijn.
We zien een sterk potentieel voor toekomstige ontwikkeling in het werk van Cemre Kara dat we graag willen ondersteunen via het residentieprogramma van iii.
We moeten ook de twee andere genomineerden voor de prijs noemen:
Kexin Hao met Total Body Workout voor het brengen van vreugde in het autoritaire beeld van het gezonde lichaam in een tijd waarin het hard nodig is, en
Leonardo Scarin voor het nemen van twee dingen die we gewoonlijk niet leuk vinden, een VR-headset en quarantaine, en ze combineren in de poëtische en mooie ervaring die Variations on a Remote Room is.
Over iii
iii is een door kunstenaars geleid community platform dat nieuwe interdisciplinaire artistieke praktijken ondersteunt die performance, technologie en de menselijke zintuigen met elkaar verbinden. Opgericht door alumni van de ArtScience Interfaculteit en het Instituut voor Sonologie in 2013, streeft iii elk jaar naar het ondersteunen van pas afgestudeerden vanaf het begin.
iii heeft sinds 2021 erkenning gekregen van de gemeente Den Haag en het Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie in de vorm van structurele financiering en kan daarmee kunstenaars sterker ondersteunen in de delicate overgang tussen studie en beroepspraktijk.
