WORKOUT LED BY HAROLD LUYA
MUSIC LIVE CODED BY JOBI
COST: €5-10 sliding scale per session

The ALGO-RHYTHM DANCE WORKOUT is a momentary antidote to the screen fatigue we’re all experiencing these days. Join us for a one-hour, joy-filled online dance workout class set to up-beat, live coded music. iii has invited dancer-choreographer Harold Luya and musical pop-alchemist JOBI to undertake a week-long flash residency to develop a unique dance workout routine especially suited to make algorithms move your body.

You may have heard of Algoraves, dance music events where electronic musicians are challenged to get an audience dancing by live programming algorithmic beats. This is kind of like that, except this time we want to challenge you!

In this workout we’ll focus not just on busting some great new moves. It’s equally about building stamina, gaining strength, finding a rhythm, happy vibes and having fun. The class is open to anyone with a positive attitude (or in dire need of one) and some sweat to shed.
There will be two sessions on zoom 8 November, one at 13:00 and one at 17:00 (times are Central European Time). Each class is an hour long, and you can sign up for one or both of them.

About the artists

Harold Luya is a dancer with Congolese roots who grew up in Leiden. At thirteen he started to dance; which worked out a bit better for him than playing football. After following formal dance training at the Academy of Theater and Dance in Amsterdam he interned with the Poetic Disasters Club, the talent development arm of the innovative dance company Club Guy & Roni. For one and a half years he was a dancer in The Lion King until he was “saved” by a permanent appointment from Club Guy & Roni, where he now has been an integral part of the company for many years. Recently Harold has started LUYA-RHYTHM, a program of online and offline dance workout classes where he brings his unique Afro-pop inspired choreography into workouts that help people connect with rhythm and their bodies. JOBI traverses the Dutch hardcore and algorave scenes, using custom software to create a proudly joyful mess of hard experimental pop. Through live coding, they mangle together samples from video games, heavy machinery and chart hits into chaotic club bangers. Jobi is the alias of Jo Kroese, a data scientist, artist and musician based in Amsterdam. Their work focuses on using technology to make the world more joyful and just. Through their data science company Citizense they have worked on everything from calculating the number of fish caught in the sea for the UK government to estimating FGM prevalence in Ethiopia. Outside Citizense, Jo runs the Radical Data Project, a research program that asks two questions: 1. what can activists, citizens and communities do to reduce the harms of data and 2. how can we use data positively to address injustice, provide hopeful visions of the world and solidify those visions into change?
