15:10 Heart of a Dog, Laurie Anderson (2015)
Heart of a Dog (2015) is a documentary directed by visual artist and composer Laurie Anderson. It centers on Anderson’s remembrances of her late beloved piano-playing and finger-painting dog Lolabelle. Searching for what it means to live, to die, to remember, and to love, Anderson investigates where the individual, be it dog or human, stands in the greater scheme of things, and how certain events as the loss of a companion change our perception.
In this experimental personal essay following Lolabelle’s passing, Anderson revisits experiences and contemplates on their influences, as losing her friend the artist Gordon Matta-Clark, and accompanying her dear companion Lolabelle in the process of leaving this world, interweaving these with the events leading up to 9/11 and her own childhood memories. “What am I?”, Anderson asks in the film and sings: “I walk accompanied by ghosts.”
Matters of Being #5 is presented by iii with financial support from Creative Industries Fund NL and The Municipality of The Hague
