Philip Vermeulen and Mariska de Groot in Neural #60

Philip Vermeulen’s Physical Rhythm Machine/Boem BOem and Mariska de Groot’s The Optical Sound Orchestra were reviewed in Neural Magazine Issue #60.

On Physical Rhythm Machine:

“The audience is placed in the line of fire of this space that is both machinic and tribal. The result is a percussion instrument of architectural proportions that with its inhuman strength humbles the body and terrifies the senses”

On The Optical Sound Orchestra:

“an exemplary performative media act, expressing a media archeology attitude… Here the concept of ‘expanded cinema’ is extended towards the cinematic aural, using the same instruments that the historical movement employed, but stretching their limits. Similarly, the projectors are possibly playing their most intimate soundtrack ever, still working in their own ideal state.”
