The constructed spaces that we inhabit are usually designed to please the eye, but they are also full of sound. With sound we can extend our bodies into the environment around us. We can use sound to feel things at a distance, we can explore hidden properties of materials or occupy a space with an invisible presence. In the act of performing, we can attract others into ritual arenas in which bodies, objects and their subjectivities become temporarily confused. With inventiveness and an open mind, any place can become a theatre for music and dance.
In this workshop participants will be introduced to theoretical notions, methodological tools and examples of artworks crossing the boundaries between visual arts, music, theatre, architecture and media technology. Participants will be guided through listening exercises. They will develop their own self-made instruments and will be invited to create a performance engaging with the specific properties of a chosen site.
There is no prior knowledge required. Participants should have an interest in new (sensory) experiences and be open to explore new territories through embodied action. Previous experience in the fields of performance (music, theatre, dance, performance art), DIY instrument making, media production, architecture and urban planning can all be useful entry points to the workshop.
About the Facilitator
Focusing on the potential of listening to establish new connections between people, places and objects, Matteo Marangoni’s performances and installations employ field recordings, sound archives, computer programming and DIY electronics. Finding unconventional uses for audio technologies and other media, his work probes the relationship between sound, space and the body, approaching the body of the listener through physical experiences that collapse and reshape the space between subject and object.
His work has been presented amongst others at Stroom Den Haag, TodayArt festival, Dag in de Branding (The Hague), STEIM, Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ, W139 (Amsterdam), Ethonologisches Museum (Berlin), November Music (Den Bosch), STUK (Leuven), NAISA (Toronto), CentroCentro (Madrid), European Media Art Festival (Osnabruck), Centrale Fies (Dro), Triennale di Milano (Milan), Q-02 (Brussels) and Goldsmith’s University (London). His installation “Quiet Before the Storm” received an honorary mention at the Sonic Arts Award 2014. He is a founder of the artist initiative iii in The Hague.
